Network connections in LOAS's apartments

Residents have access to broadband internet connections in all LOAS’s apartments. The internet connection is not subject to a separate fee, but instead the service is included in the rent.

Most LOAS properties are connected to LOAS's own Lnet network, which provides a regular local area network (Ethernet) to the apartments. The nominal connection speed is 10/100/1000 Mb/s depending on the connected device. The actual data transfer speed may vary depending on the equipment and network conditions.
Some properties lack the cabling within the buildings and in those, either a Lnet WLAN connection or a Telia cable modem connection is provided.

All LOAS's residents are entitled to the use of the network. The lease terms require tenants to follow the rules and instructions of network use.

Connecting to the network in properties with Lnet

To connect to Lnet, you need a computer or a router with a regular local area network (Ethernet) connection. The device must be configured to use dynamic network configuration (DHCP), which is the same as in most networks, so you'll usually have it enabled. If this is not the case see e.g. Microsoft's guide for changing the network settings on Windows.

In addition to the computer or router, you'll need a LAN cable with the 8-pin "RJ45" connectors. Note: don't try to use cables with the smaller four-wire "RJ11" connectors meant for landline/DSL connections. The connection will not work, and the smaller connector may damage the connector in the wall socket.

In most properties connected to Lnet, all cables within the apartment are connected to the network, but at least in Laserkatu 1 (Timppa), you need to check the active socket in the box near the entrance to the apartment. In Laserkatu 3, there are two sets of network sockets. Only the ones installed in cable ducts on the walls are in use, the old connectors near the landline socket and cabled within the wall are not in use.

Connecting to the network in properties with WLAN

WLAN connections are used in Leirikatu 2.

There are two networks available: the universities' network Eduroam, which works with credentials from your organization; and LOAS's own WLNET, which works with credentials created in LOAS's intra.

Instructions for using Eduroam can be found in LUT's Elut-service and on LAB's web pages. If the universities change the web pages and the links die, you can also try a Google search.

The credentials needed for WLNET can be created in intra as follows: Log in to intra.loas.fi, and open your lease details. Above the detailed info there is a button that says "Wlan password". The username is fixed, but you can set the password. Note: setting the password only works on and after the day your lease is set to begin and shows as "active" in intra, so if you move in before that day, you will not be able to create the credentials.

If your credentials don't work when signing in to Eduroam, check if they work in your organization's other services, and if necessary, resolve the issue with your organization.

Connecting to the network in properties with cable modems

Cable modems are in use in Reippaankatu 2.

The cable modem device should be found in the apartment, and the connection should work by just plugging your device to the modem in the same as you'd connect to any other local area network.

If there's no modem, or it's broken, contact LOAS. If the network connection doesn't work, see Telia's guide for network problems (in Finnish only) or contact Telia's customer service. When contacting Telia's customer service, please point out that you are the user of the internet connection/tenant of the apartment while the internet subsription is owned by LOAS.
