Lnet is based on Ethernet technology which is familiar from local networks, but the due to the wide-scale distances, the main connections are fiber optic instead of copper cable. The connection from Lnet to the rest of the world travels via the Funet network maintained by CSC. Lnet’s edge point is located in the vicinity of LUT University but the network is completely separate to the university’s network.
In most of the buildings offering a wired network connection, the connection speed of 1 Gb/s. The trunk connections between the buildings are 10 Gb/s fiber connections. Cabling beyond the centre is LOAS’ own, but in the centre fiber connections owned by the City of Lappeenranta are also used.
The network has approximately 2,500 connections which have been divided into five subnets. Residents are served by almost one hundred individual switches and a few servers that support the network's software side.
Some properties (Kalliopellonkatu 10, Katajakatu 8, Leirikatu 2, Reippaankatu 2 and Upseeritie 1) offer wireless networks instead of cabled connections. The wireless networks available are eduroam, which can be used with the universities user accounts, and WLNET, for which the credentials can be found in LOAS’s intranet. Instructions for using eduroam can also be found in LUT’s Uni service.
In problem situations, fill in the separate fault report.
